Please note that any skater registered in an SCBC session is permitted to participate on scheduled club assessment days. Parents and skaters are directed to discuss assessment day participation and the assessment process for each individual assessment, with their coach.

STAR 1-5 assessments will be assessed by the skater’s own coach. Assessments in the STAR 1-5 program are designed to be introduced in a semi-formal format and progress in formality to prepare the skaters for external evaluation in the Learn to Compete stage of development.

STAR 1 & 2 is the Introduction format whereby the assessments will occur in the skater’s natural training environment, during their lesson time. This may be in group, semi or private lessons. Practice attire is acceptable for this type of assessment.

STAR 2, 3 & 4 is the Transitional Format. These assessments also occur in the skater’s natural training environment, during their regular lesson time and may also be conducted in group, semi or private lessons. To increase the formality, only skaters being assesses will participate in the assessment. Proper skating attire is required for this type of assessment.

STAR 4 & 5 is the Classic Format. There are 2 assessments in the STAR 5 level that require this CLASSIC format which are STAR 5a Dance, and STAR 5 Freeskate Program. All other STAR 4 & 5 assessments have the option of being performed in either the Transitional or Classic format. Coaches will stand off the ice for the assessment to simulate an external evaluation and skaters will perform their assessment on clear ice. Proper skating attire is required for this type of assessment.

STAR 6 to Gold Skating Skills assessments are evaluated by a coach who holds valid certification to evaluate an assessment of this level.

Once a skater reaches Star 5 level, Freeskate and Dance tests are taken on Assessment Days and are evaluated by Skate Canada certified evaluators. Proper skating attire is required for this type of assessment. Parents and skaters should note that SCBC does not control which assessment official(s) is/are assigned for our assessment days.

If your child has already passed a Skate Canada test under the previous system, they will be grandfathered to the appropriate Star 1-5 level within the new system.

Please keep/maintain your skater’s assessment/test records in the event that they are required to resolve discrepancies between Skate Canada and SCBC records.

For more details on Assessment Days, please refer to the Assessment Day page on the SCBC website.

VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT POLICY

SCBC operates as a not-for-profit organization that requires the support of volunteers to operate successfully. The club offers various volunteer opportunities throughout the course of the skating season. This year we are pleased to be able to once again partner with Skate Ontario to host several events and competitions which include:

Sectional Series
Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga
August 19th – 21st, 2022

Synchro Series: Skate Canada Classic
CAA Centre
December 9th – 11th, 2022

Provincial Series: Flower City Invitational
Cassie Campbell Community Centre
February 9th – 12th, 2023

Events such as these serve as important fundraising opportunities for our club and these funds go directly towards supporting our athletes and programs. Hosting competitions relies heavily on the support of our valued members and families to fill volunteer roles over the course of the event. Information on how to volunteer your time at these events will be communicated closer to each event – please keep an eye out for a request for volunteers in your email inboxes in the coming weeks for the Sectional Series Competition in August.

We also have several other volunteer opportunities throughout the season including the Holiday show in December, Session reps for CanSkate and other sessions as well as the SCBC Star 1-4 Competition in May.

The volunteer following commitment applies to all registered skater families in the following sessions; Star 1-2, Star 3-4, Star 5+, Open and Ice Dance.

The volunteer requirement for each family is 15 volunteer hours or $250. For families with multiple children in our program, an additional 5 hours or $50 is required per each additional child.

Volunteer hours may be contributed by skaters, only where the skater has reached 16 years of age. There are a limited number of opportunities for these skaters to gain the necessary hours. Check with the SCBC Board to determine what qualifies as acceptable hours. These skaters at their discretion, can use these hours towards the High School Volunteer Commitment that students are required to complete. Volunteer hours may not be used for both, therefore the skater will need to decide how they would like their hours counted. CanSkate Program Assistant hours do not count as part of the volunteer commitment under this program.

Volunteer Reporting Cards are available for all members through the SCBC website. Once you have completed a volunteer session, you are to record this on your form and have it signed off in the club office. Only SCBC Board members are able to authorize your volunteer hours.

A $250.00 volunteer credit per skater ($50 per each additional child) will be added to your 2022-2023 registration. Once your volunteer hours have been verified, the volunteer fees will be returned in the form of a direct refund to your credit card, or a credit to be used for future SCBC programming.

Note: There is no payout for partial hours completed against your deposit. If you do not complete the required number of volunteer hours, your credit will not be returned.

Volunteer forms are due back to the club, attention SCBC Board on or before June 1st of the skating year. Only these hours will be used to count towards your volunteer hours for the year. Any hours after June 1st will be counted towards the following year’s volunteer commitment. Credits/refunds for the volunteer commitment deposit will be made by July 1st.

Information on each of these volunteer opportunities will be communicated out to our membership as each event approaches or you can reach out to the contacts listed above. If you have any questions regarding the Volunteer Commitment program please contact [email protected].
