SESSION DATES

Spring CanSkate programs commence the week of April 2nd, 2024.

There are no regular SCBC sessions running on the following dates:

• Monday, September 4th, 2023 (Labour day)
• October 7th – 9th, 2023 (Thanksgiving)
• October 15th, 2023 (Ice Dance)
• December 10th, 2023 (Ice Dance)
• December 20th, 2022 – January 5th, 2024 (Winter break)
• February 9th – 11th, 2024 (Flower City Invitational Competition hosted by SCBC)
• February 19th, 2024 (Family Day Monday)
• March 11th – 17th, 2024 (Spring break)
• March 22nd – 24th, 2024 (Skate Ontario Provincial Championships hosted by SCBC & Gold Ice)
  • Friday, March 22nd CanSkate and Teen/Adult CanSkate sessions will run as scheduled at Jim archdekin Recreation Centre
• March 28th (Pad B sessions cancelled only)
  • Open, CanSkate & Star 1-2 cancelled
• March 29th – April 1st, 2024 (Easter weekend)
• May 18th – 20th, 2024 (Victoria day long weekend)

The last day of SCBC 2023-2024 programs is Sunday, June 16th, 2024

REGISTRATION

For step-by-step instructions on how to register, please see our STEP-BY-STEP REGISTRATION DOCUMENT.

All skaters MUST register for the highest session they qualify for at the time of registration. SCBC reserves the right to modify session qualifications for safety and capacity concerns.

PAYMENT

Payment must be made by credit card or using credits on file. All payments must be in CAD dollars. The SCBC Board reserves the right to amend the individual session qualifications and change the posted schedule at any time, as necessary for successful operation of club programming.

SCBC BASE REGISTRATION FEE

When registering for any SCBC scheduled session, the following base registration fee will be automatically added to your invoice:

• Skate Canada Registrant Fee $28.00 (Mandated by Skate Canada)
• Skate Ontario Registrant Fee $25.00 (Mandated by Skate Ontario)
• Skate Canada Safe Sport Fee $5.00 (Mandated by Skate Canada)
• Skate Canada Insurance Fee $0.70 (Mandated by Skate Canada)
• SCBC Administration Fee $6.30

Total: $65.00

This base registration fee (covering Sept 1, 2023 – Aug 31, 2024) is collected by SCBC and remitted to Skate Canada on the skater’s behalf.

VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT POLICY

SCBC operates as a not-for-profit organization that requires the support of volunteers to operate successfully. The club offers various volunteer opportunities throughout the course of the skating season.

The volunteer following commitment applies to all registered skater families in the following sessions; Star 1-2, Star 3-4, Star 5+, Open, Junior Academy, Pre-Competitive, Adult/Teen StarSkate and Ice Dance.

The volunteer requirement for each family is 15 volunteer hours or $300. For families with multiple children in our program, an additional 5 hours or $75 is required per each additional child.

A $250.00 volunteer deposit per skater ($75 per each additional child) will be added to your 2023-2024 registration. Once your volunteer hours have been verified, the volunteer deposit will be returned in the form of a direct refund to your credit card.

Note: There is no payout for partial hours completed against your deposit. If you do not complete the required number of volunteer hours, your deposit will not be returned.

The Star 1-2 session is our entry level figure skating program. Skaters must be working with a private coach.

Qualifications:

• Successful completion in full, all Stage 6 CanSkate Levels of the Skate Canada CanSkate Program.

This is a two (2) day a week skating program. Skaters are free to select any two days from the available sessions that work best for their schedule. If a day is full, the skater will be required to select another day to fulfill their 2-day session requirement. Skaters looking for additional ice time beyond their two day registration commitment are encouraged to register in any of the remaining Star 1-2 session days.

Session Fees Include:

• 2 group lessons, to be led by an SCBC Professional Coach.
  • These 15-minute sessions will occur during the first 15 minutes and the last 15 minutes of the session.
  • These group lessons are available to all skaters on the session and are already included in your registration fee; however, participation on a daily basis may be affected periodically by the “private lesson” schedule set out by your skater’s base coach.
• Off Ice Classes (see off ice section below for schedules)
  • Fitness & Conditioning
  • Off Ice Jump Classes

At this level it is mandatory for skaters to obtain and work with a private coach. Skaters will begin to have independent personal development time on this session. Please contact Operations Coordinator Andrea Nesbitt at [email protected] if you have not yet been paired with a private coach.

Proper figure skating attire and figure skates are required for skaters at the Star 1-2 level and higher. Please reach out to your base coach for recommendations on where to purchase proper equipment.

Star 1-2 session skaters are permitted to Guest Skate on any other Star 1-2 sessions, where the session attendance capacity has not been met. Please refer to the Guest skating policy for additional details and the procedures regarding Guest Skating.

STARSKATE

Qualifications:

• Completed Full Star 5 Freeskate (Elements and Program)

This is a minimum two (2) day a week skating program, however skaters are free to select any number of Open sessions above this minimum requirement that they wish to skate. Star 5+ skaters may skate on the Star 5+ Sessions or the Open Sessions.

• 1 stroking & power group lesson on Mondays and Wednesdays
  • This will be led by an SCBC Professional Coach
  • These group lessons are available to all skaters on the session and are already included in your registration fee; however, participation on a daily basis may be affected periodically by the “private lesson” schedule set out by your skater’s base coach.
• Off Ice Classes (see off ice section below for schedules)
  • Fitness & Conditioning
  • Off Ice Jump Classes

Star 5+ session skaters are permitted to Guest Skate on any Star 5+ or Open session where the session attendance capacity has not been met. Please refer to the Guest skating policy for additional details and the procedures regarding Guest Skating.

Skaters will have significant independent personal development time on this session. All registered skaters must be working with an SCBC contracted private coach.

STARSKATE

Qualifications:

• 13 years of age and older
• Completed CanSkate Stage 6

For skaters under the age of 16 of age, this is a minimum two (2) day a week skating program. Skaters may register for both Teen/Adult StarSkate sessions or any other StarSkate session that they qualify for to complete the two-day per week package. This program runs from September 5th – June 16th.

For skaters 16 and older, they may select one or both of the Teen/Adult StarSkate sessions to skate on.

• The 2023 SCBC Fall Adult StarSkate Program will run from September 6th – December 19th
• The 2024 SCBC Winter/Spring Adult StarSkate Program will run from January 6th – June 16th, 2023.

TEEN/ADULT STARSKATE

The Pre-Competitive program is a program designed for skaters who are pursuing competitive free skating. Skaters on this session must demonstrate dedication and a continual commitment to their training. Their main focus should be on developing and expanding their FreeSkate abilities.

Pre-Competitive skaters should be moving towards becoming a Competitive figure skater in their respective StarSkate / CompetitiveSkate category. Skaters on this session will participate in 2 specific training days (Tuesdays and Thursdays) however skaters at this level are strongly encouraged to take additional training days (on top of the two-day requirement) to complement their development.

Participation in this program is by coach recommendation based on qualifications.

All Pre-Competitive skaters must have a SCBC contracted coach for private lessons. In some cases, it may in the best interest of the skater to have multiple coaches (coaching team) to cover all technical aspects of the skater’s development.

GUEST SKATING is NOT permitted on this session, without the pre-approval of the SCBC Board, on the recommendation of the Skater Assessment Committee.

It is the expectation that all Pre-Competitive skaters will be competing in Skate Ontario sanctioned events throughout the year.

COMPETITIVESKATE

SCBC is committed to providing a competitive and comprehensive training environment for our skaters. Off-ice training is included for all skaters in Youth StarSkate, CompetitiveSkate and Ice Dance programs.

Skaters may attend any of the off-ice classes offered for their current session level.
